Eleocharis vivipara live plant from TaraPet is a stunning tall hairgrass species that creates breathtaking flowing backgrounds in freshwater aquariums. Unlike its shorter relatives, this eleocharis variety grows to impressive heights with fine, thread-like stems that sway gracefully in water currents. Known for its unique viviparous reproduction where new plantlets form at the tips of mature stems, this species spreads naturally to create dense, meadow-like formations that look absolutely spectacular in larger planted tanks.

The vivipara hairgrass produces slender, bright green stems that grow upward and gently arch at the tips, creating a flowing curtain effect. What makes this species truly special is its viviparous nature, where daughter plants develop at the ends of stems and eventually root themselves in the substrate. This natural propagation method means a small initial planting can gradually fill an entire background section without manual intervention.

Growth and Propagation

This eleocharis vivipara live plant reproduces through a fascinating process where tiny plantlets form at the tips of mature stems. These baby plants develop their own root systems while still attached to the parent, eventually bending down to root in the substrate nearby. This cascading growth pattern creates a lush, multi-layered look that is difficult to achieve with other aquatic plant species.

Care Guidelines

Plant small bunches in fine-grained substrate with adequate spacing between clumps to allow for natural spreading. This species adapts to moderate lighting conditions and does not require CO2 injection, though supplementation encourages denser growth. Regular iron and micronutrient fertilization promotes vibrant green coloration and healthy stem development throughout the plant colony.

Aquascaping Applications

Use this tall hairgrass to create stunning natural backgrounds that mimic underwater meadows and grasslands. The flowing stems create beautiful movement and depth when positioned behind hardscape elements like rocks and driftwood. Combined with shorter foreground plants, it helps establish the classic sense of depth and scale that defines professional aquascape compositions.

Benefits for Your Aquarium

Dense stands of this hairgrass provide excellent shelter for small fish, fry, and shrimp seeking protection from larger tank mates. The fine stems offer substantial surface area for beneficial bacteria colonization and algae-grazing organisms. Active nutrient uptake helps maintain clean water by absorbing dissolved nitrates and phosphates from the water column.
